4 Steps to Declutter Your Closet & Maximize Storage Space…

How to Declutter Your Closet in 4 Easy Steps

Whether you have a lot of clutter, a small closet, we can help you get the most out of your space with these simple yet creative solutions. Here’s how to declutter your closet, organize it and get the most storage possible…

Steps to Declutter Your Clothes Closet:

I understand the concern about time for decluttering, especially with a hectic schedule. Even small steps, like sorting one section at a time or setting aside short intervals regularly, can make a significant difference.

Consider breaking down the task into manageable chunks that fit your schedule. Here are the tips I follow to organize, declutter and refresh my closets…

1. Where to Start When De-Cluttering a Closet…

First, remove all items from your closet. This gives you blank space to start with, and it can make this project feel less overwhelming. Plus, you can clean the inside of your closet, wipe down shelves and vacuum the floor while it’s clear.

2. What Should Keep or Discard?

Second, sort items into piles that you want to keep, donate/sell or trash. It can also be a good idea to have a “maybe” pile so that your decluttering project doesn’t get held up by items that are tough decisions.

You can go through the “maybe” pile after you’ve sorted through other items, thus speeding up the process.

Deciding what to keep or toss when decluttering your closet can be tough, especially with sentimental or unsure feelings about an item’s worth. Here’s what I’ve learned through experience: consider keeping items that you’ve used in the last year or hold deep sentimental value.

Anything beyond that might be worth donating or discarding to free up space. Ask yourself if the item truly serves a purpose or brings you joy. If not, it might be time to let it go. Trust your instincts and focus on what truly matters to you now.

Note: Some people like to choose a “last date worn/used” rule, which can make decision-making easier. For instance, if you haven’t used an item in over a year, get rid of it. (This lets someone else enjoy the item rather than it sitting unused in your closet.)

3. Where to Give or Sell Your Unused Clothing:

Third, evaluate the items you want to give away or sell. For example, some clothing pieces may be in better condition than others, so you may be able to sell them on sites like Poshmark or Thredup. You can also try local clothing consignment stores.

On the other hand, items that are more worn may sell better on eBay or at a garage sale. They may not bring in as much cash, but if you have a lot of stuff, the money can add up, possibly covering the cost of a new closet organizer.

Tip: Many people worry about creating waste when decluttering. Consider donating usable items to charities or recycling them responsibly. Research local donation centers or recycling options to minimize environmental impact.

Letting go of items tied to sentimental value can be challenging during decluttering. Try taking photos of sentimental items to preserve memories while freeing up physical space. Recognize that memories reside within you, not just in possessions. Gradually parting with items can ease emotional attachment.

4. How Do You Organize Your Closet Effectively?

Organizing your closet effectively post-declutter can seem daunting, but there are simple tricks that work. Categorize items by type, like grouping tops, bottoms, and accessories together. Utilize storage solutions, such as bins or shelves, to maximize space and maintain order.

Hang frequently worn clothes at eye level for easy access. Consider using hooks or hangers for accessories like belts or scarves to save space. Regularly reassess and reorganize to sustain a tidy and functional closet.

Now, take measurements if you want to get a closet organizer. Alternatively, you can get stackable storage drawers, hanging organizers or Cubeicals.

Note: Not only do closet organizers minimize clutter, they keep everything easy to find. Plus, it’s easier to keep the space neat and clean long-term without a lot of effort. Not to mention, orderly closets can usually fit more items, not that I’m encouraging you to by more stuff.

How to Maximize Space in Your Closet:

1. Take advantage of vertical storage space. In other words, don’t forget the top area of your closet. This spot provides the perfect location for storing out-of-season clothes that you don’t need to access.

2. Install double hanging rods instead of single (or install shelving or cubbies below). Multiple rods allow you to hang twice as much clothing in the same amount of space. Plus, this strategy doesn’t have to cost a lot if you use something like a Rubbermaid Closet Kit.

3. If your closet has swing-open doors, take advantage of this extra space with door organizers for accessories, shoes or other small items. You can instantly increase your storage space without spending more than $50.

3 Small Closet Organization Ideas:

Small closets can be challenging. If you’ve already used the tips on how to organize and declutter your closet above, it’s time to move outside the closet. Here are 3 more ideas.

Increase Closet Storage by Adding Under-Bed Drawers:

First, add roll-out drawers underneath your bed. You may be surprised at how much space there is down there. You can actually find some platform bed frames with drawers already built-in, and they may actually save you money.

  1. Hidden Storage Space: Exploits the often-unused space under the bed, providing concealed storage that doesn’t disrupt the visual appeal of the bedroom.
  2. Seasonal Item Storage: Ideal for storing out-of-season clothing, bedding, or shoes, keeping them accessible yet neatly tucked away until needed.
  3. Protective Storage: Offers a protected environment for items, shielding them from dust, sunlight, or potential damage that can occur in less enclosed storage spaces.
  4. Accessibility and Convenience: Provides easy access to stored items with smooth roll-out drawers, eliminating the need to bend or lift heavy boxes to retrieve items.
  5. Functional Versatility: Beyond clothes or bedding, these drawers can hold various items like books, toys, or craft supplies, providing versatile storage options.

Free Up More Closet Space with Door-Hanging Organizers:

Second, use an over-the-door shoe organizer either on your bedroom or bathroom door. You’ll be surprised at how much space you can free up in your closet simply by moving all of your shoes.

  1. Maximize Vertical Space: Utilizes otherwise unused space behind the closet door, making it an ideal storage spot for shoes without occupying closet floor or shelf space.
  2. Multi-Purpose Use: Besides shoes, these organizers can hold various items like accessories, scarves, socks, cleaning supplies, or small toys, maximizing versatility.
  3. Visibility and Accessibility: Allows easy visibility and access to shoes or items stored in clear pockets, making it convenient to find and grab what you need without rummaging through the closet.
  4. Preservation and Protection: Helps in preserving the condition of shoes by keeping them separated and preventing scuffing or damage that may occur when shoes are piled together on a closet floor.
  5. Space-Efficient: Frees up space within the closet, enabling better organization of remaining items like clothes or accessories, reducing clutter inside the closet itself.
  6. Temporary Storage Solution: Useful for temporary or transitional storage, especially for frequently used shoes or items, ensuring they’re easily accessible without permanent installation.
  7. Easy Installation and Removal: Most over-the-door shoe organizers require minimal assembly and no tools for installation, making them suitable for various door types and easily removable if needed.

Implement Freestanding Closet Organizers

Third, if you have a small closet but a decent-sized bedroom, consider freestanding closet organizers. Some can be aesthetically pleasing to look at as long as you keep them organized, and they’re becoming a trendy closet solution due to their industrial style.

Summary:

When decluttering your closet, whether spacious or small, these simple and creative solutions can maximize your space effectively. By following the step-by-step guide to declutter, organize, and optimize storage, you’ll transform your wardrobe into a functional and tidy space that meets your needs.
